PROJECT: Dragon Bio Shield Removal

Client: RSRL

Location: Winfrith, Dorchester, Dorset

Project Length: 3 months

Project Overview

The work was undertaken as part of the Dragon Reactor decommissioning programme.

The bio shield formed part of the reactor primary containment system and was therefore a significant structure. To allow its segmentation and removal a combination of Wire and Track Sawing was utilised. BD Nuclear bespoke lifting bars were also used to ease the handling of the block sections following cutting. The majority of the material was disposed of as radiologically clean and BD Nuclear loaded the blocks to the transport provided to allow its despatch for recycling.

The work was completed to programme without issue and helped prepare the reactor for the next stage of decommissioning.
